Richard Ansdell: Biography

Born and educated in Liverpool, he studied art under W.C. Smith, a Chatham portrait painter. He became a prolific painter
of animals and of Highland and Spanish scenes in the manner of Landseer. At his best he must be considered in the front rank
of 19th century animal painters. Although the figures predominate in his pictures the surrounding landscape is equally well painted.

He collaborated occasionally with Thomas Cressick, R.A., and etched a few plates of animals. In 1856 he visited Spain with John
Philip with whom he worked. His large output was so appreciated in his lifetime that he was able to amass a fortune. He was a
member of the Liverpool Academy and was elected President of it from 1837-1852.
